Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day

Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day (IH Day) is a global awareness day dedicated to increasing understanding of Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH) - a serious neurological sleep disorder that causes excessive sleepiness, severe difficulty waking, long unrefreshing sleep, cognitive dysfunction, and significant impacts on daily life.

For many people, IH affects education, work, relationships, independence, and mental health. Yet awareness of the condition remains low, and many people face long delays to diagnosis or misunderstanding of their symptoms.

IH Day is an opportunity to:

  • Raise awareness of Idiopathic Hypersomnia

  • Share lived experience

  • Challenge myths and stigma

  • Support people living with IH

  • Advocate for better recognition, treatment, and research

A new chapter in awareness

For more than a decade, Hypersomnolence Australia led the Global Idiopathic Hypersomnia Awareness Week (IHAW), helping bring global attention to a condition that was once rarely recognised.

As awareness continues to grow, IH Day provides a focal point for the global community to come together and build on that momentum.

We are grateful to be partnering with Hypersomnia Foundation. Together, we hope this collaborative effort will accelerate the diagnostic process, advance research to identify the cause, and reduce stigma.

When is IH Day?

IH Day is held annually. The date may vary each year in line with global events and collaborations. Check back here each year for current details.

IH Day 2026

Each year, Hypersomnolence Australia supports Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day by helping people living with IH take part in the global campaign and by sharing local voices, stories, and awareness activities.

This year’s theme: Where in the World is Idiopathic Hypersomnia?

Idiopathic Hypersomnia affects people all over the world. This year’s IH Day, we want to acknowledge and celebrate our global community. Together, we are stronger. Through connection and community, we build deeper understanding — and a powerful collective force for change.

Take part in IH Day 2026

This year’s campaign brings together people living with IH from across the world — a visible reminder that no one is navigating this condition alone.

Take part in the Where in the world IH campaign.

Building on our Living with IH Around the World initiative launched during IHAW, this year’s campaign continues to map the global IH community. In 2025, people from 32 countries — including 40 US states — took part, creating one of the first visible snapshots of where people with idiopathic hypersomnia are living around the world.

This year, that work continues. By taking part in the Where in the world IH campaign, you are helping to strengthen that global picture — making the community more visible, more connected, and harder to overlook.
