LIVING WITH IDIOPATHIC HYPERSOMNIA

KRYSTA REYNOLDS

My name is Krysta Reynolds. I am 19. I am from the USA. Living with Idiopathic Hypersomnia is only part of my story.

I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH) not even a year ago. I never imagined I would be able to achieve what I'm doing but here I am making art and going to night classes to become a Radiographic Technologist! Right out of high school I took a trip to Ireland with my Mom and then 1 week after we got home, I started my 2 year program. I graduate in August 2020.

For as long as I can remember it was a constant struggle every day between my mom and I because of my sleepiness and the great difficulty I had trying to wake up in the morning. As soon as I was diagnosed with IH, it became clear to my mom and I what was really going on. It answered so many things, but it also left me with just as many questions. The diagnosis has been like a big weight has lifted off of me. Knowing I am not alone even if it's only a few, and knowing that there isn’t something wrong with me, I just function differently and it’s not my fault, has given me the strength to keep fighting every day with my family, friends and my health care providers help and support.
